Other p2p apps became legit the most famous being napster. I still think you have a misconception of the meaning of peer to peer. Bittorrent is a technology that is way more advanced than the early sharing protocols and has been adopted by many legit sources. P2P was designed to allow any sharing of any files trusted or not. The protocols used in Bittorrent are not specific for Vuze they are for all torrent clients. Many files can be mislabelled and yes you are crazy to use limewire. Limewire is a different thing altogether. Most people who are using P2P software, though, probably don't understand the concept of a "trusted source." However, I would still stand by that statement except when you are using P2P software to download from a trusted source (which seems to be contrary to the design of P2P, but is, as you point out, being done in some cases). Yes, I'll revise that statement in light of the exceptions that you have pointed out. P2P file sharing is designed to allow downloading from any average Joe who has the file on his hard drive. However, many other P2P programs, like Limewire, do not have such controls.ĭownloading from a trusted source is not what P2P technology was designed to do. In that case, downloading via Vuze sounds like it would be safe. I was not aware of that, as I've never actually heard of Vuze. The original seeder would have been verified by Vuze. When downloading a torrent from a trusted source such as Vuze's HD network this would not be a risk at all. If bittorrent was insecure why do the BBC, Revision3 and many other media companies use it. The bottom line when downloading any data from anywhere using any medium is to make sure it is from a trusted source. There are many peers on their p2p networks who you dont know yes people serving the content from their home computers which you could argue would inject malware into the swarm so therefore are you saying we should not use spotify or on demand tv services as well? Using your logic we therefore should not use applications such as Spotify or many of the legit 'on demand TV' set top boxes which all harness P2P (bittorrent like) technology to distribute their content. Many mainstream media companies are now using bittorrent to distribute their content. There is no risk using the bittorent technology to download content from a trusted source.īittorrent is the most efficient way for mass distribution of data.īy saying that anyone who uses bittorrent even for legit purposes is dumb is infact insulting. The risk is not with the technology itself it is to do with the content being downloaded. I agree for the most part torrent users are downloading pirated material. And vuze has a setting which will block any peers that send bad data. Their content is checksummed and any other peers in the swarm who try to inject data that is not checksummed for the intention of embedding malware) would be rejected. However when downloading a torrent from a trusted source such as Vuze's HD network this would not be a risk at all. Hi Thomas, I agree that there have been some exploits and malware that have been embedded into some pirated copies of mac software earlier this year. Using torrents, even for legit downloads, is - to be brutally blunt - a rather dumb thing to do. You don't know who you're downloading from with torrents, so for all you know, you're downloading a trojan that'll turn your machine into a 'bot or a keylogger that will collect personal information (including credit card numbers and account passwords).
